IFPD Issues Memorial Day Safe Driving Tips
Idaho Falls, ID – Memorial Day – the unofficial start to the summer season – is only days away,
which means many people will be on the roads this weekend. With the added traveling, the Idaho
Falls Police Department is asking people to be careful when navigating city streets, highways and
roads.
“As a police department, we strive to make the streets and roadways as safe as possible,” Idaho
Falls Police Chief Mark McBride said. “This includes educating and informing people about how to
make their driving experience the safest.”
According to AAA, this Memorial Day weekend is forecasted to be the busiest for travel since 2005.
An anticipated 34 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the weekend by
car.
In anticipation of extra vehicles on the road, the IFPD offers the following safety tips:
• Buckle up for every trip. Everyone in the vehicle should be wearing their seatbelts as it is the best
defense against injuries in any type of crash.
• Keep children safe in and around vehicles. Make sure car seats and booster seats are properly
installed and used for any child riding in the vehicle. Also, keep in mind the dangers of leaving a
child unattended in a vehicle, such as heat stroke. Children should also be vigilant and attentive
when riding bicycles in the street or playing near a roadway.
• Refrain from distracted or aggressive driving behaviors. Distracted and aggressive driving puts
drivers at greater risk for crashes. Distracted driving includes any behavior or activity that diverts a
driver’s attention from the task of driving, such as texting while driving. Aggressive driving
behavior includes speeding, driving too close or disobeying traffic rules and laws.
• Do NOT drink and drive. If you plan to drink, choose a sober designated driver before going out or
call a taxi service to take you home.
“The police department wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday,” McBride said. “Please do all you
can to be safe this weekend.”
