Don’t Leave Children in Hot Vehicles
Idaho Falls, ID – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, heatstroke is
one of the leading causes of death among children. Unfortunately, even great parents can forget a
child in the back seat.
The Idaho Falls Police Department wants to ensure everyone has a safe and happy summer. There
are potential consequences to leaving children in hot vehicles, including severe injury or death,
being arrested or jailed and a lifetime of regret.
Here are a few tips to help prevent negative consequences as a result of leaving a child in a vehicle.
• Never leave a child (even if they’re asleep) alone in a vehicle – not even for a minute. Vehicle
temperatures can rise quickly. Even at an outside temperature of 60 degrees, the temperature
inside a vehicle can reach 110 degrees. A child dies when his/her body temperature reaches 107
degrees.
• Always check the back seats of your vehicle before you lock it and walk away.
• Keep a stuffed animal or other memento in your child’s seat when it’s empty, and move it to the
front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back seat.
• If someone else is driving your child, or your daily routine has been altered, always check to make
sure your child has arrived safely.
• Keep vehicles locked at all times; even in the garage or driveway and always set your parking
brake. This will prevent children from getting into a vehicle without your knowledge. Keys and/or
remote openers should never be left within reach of children.
• If you see a child alone in a vehicle, get involved. If they are hot or seem sick, get them out as
quickly as possible. Call 911 immediately.
Pets or vulnerable adults should also not be left in hot vehicles.
