Protect Yourself Against Counterfeit Bills
Idaho Falls, ID – Whether you handle cash on a regular basis for business or for personal use, it’s
important to become familiar with the security features of United States currency. The more you
are familiar with these security features, the less likely you’ll receive a counterfeit bill.
The Idaho Falls Police Department, thanks to the U.S. Currency Education Program, offers these
great tips to keep in mind when it comes to currency:
• Feel the paper. Move your finger across the note. It should feel slightly rough to the touch due to
the printing process and unique composition of the paper.
• Tilt the note. Denominations of $10 or higher have color shifting ink in the numeral on the lower
right corner of the note. On the current style of notes, the color should change from copper to green.
The current $100 note also includes two new security features that you can check by tilting the
note; the color shifting bell in the inkwell and the 3D security ribbon. The 3D security ribbon
contains images of bells and 100s that shift as you tilt the note.
• Check with light. Hold the note to a light source to check the watermark and security thread which
are incorporated into denominations of five dollars or higher. The watermark and security threat
should be visible from both sides of the note when held to the light. For denominations of ten
dollars and higher, the watermark matches the portrait on the face of the banknote. The most
recent five‐dollar note has two watermarks both of the numeral five. The security thread appears in
different locations for each denomination and glows a unique color when exposed to UV light.
